Fact-check

India fake news using reverse image search on Yandex found that the claim shared on social media with this image is fake. Some of the people posing in the picture from left to right are as follows – Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Russian artist Nicholas Roerich (bearded) and Indian diplomat Mohammad Yunus. It was taken in 1942 at Roerichs Estate located in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh.

By searching a keyword on Google, we found this picture posted on Wikipedia. A book ISBN (978-5-86988-179-3) was given as the quotation of the picture. A search on Google of this number indicated that it was associated with the seventh volume of the letters of Nicholas Roerich’s wife Elena Roerich (Helena Roerich).

In this book, we got the picture of Nehru, Roerich and Indira Gandhi with the same man (far right). His identity has been stated as M. Yunus. Mohammad Yunus was described as a “former freedom fighter. He was not the father-in-law of Indira Gandhi but a nephew of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan. Indira Gandhi’s father-in-law, that is, Feroze Gandhi’s father, was Faridun Jehangir Gandhi.

The bearded man in the picture is Nicholas Roerich, a famous Russian painter of the 20th century. Roerich Estate is located in Naggar, Himachal Pradesh. According to a document available in the gallery, he was a Russian artist, archaeologist, philosopher, traveler, and writer. Several photographs describe that Nehru and Indira Gandhi visited the Roerich Estate in 1942.

To conclude, Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru’s photographs were shared with Indian diplomat Mohammad Yunus and Russian painter Nicholas Roerich with false claims. There was no photograph of the Nehru family with Indira Gandhi’s father-in-law “Yunus Khan”. His father-in-law, Faredoon Jehangir Ghandy, is not present in this picture.
